E492: Not an editor command
E492 means Vim didn't recognise the command you typed after :. It's usually a typo or a stray capital: commands are case sensitive, so :W fails where :w works.
The keys
| Keys | What they do |
|---|---|
:w, not :W | Save |
:wq, not :Wq | Save and quit |
:q, not :Q | Quit |
| : then ↑ | Bring back the last command to fix it |
Vim prints what it couldn't understand after the colon, so E492: Not an editor command: Wq points straight at the capital W.
Holding Shift a moment too long is the classic cause. Some people add command W w to their vimrc so :W saves too.
